Ruby's Home

Early yesterday, I got a call from the shelter stating they arranged to have Ruby spayed.  She was already at the clinic.  They asked if I could pick her up in the afternoon.  OF COURSE!  I called the husband to tell him the good news.  He was excited.  I asked what we were going to do with her for the night.  He said to put her in the house for the night since it was gonna be cold.

So after work, I hurried over to the clinic to pick her up.  The vet tech went over her paperwork.  Miss Ruby had some womanly issues, pus in her uterus to be exact.  Isn't that gross.  So she is on antibiotics.  And she tested light for heartworms.  The tech said it meant that she had some but should be okay with preventative.  However, every dog is different so I should have a full service vet check her out to be sure.  :(  Good news, the shelter gives you 30 days of pets insurance so I'm gonna use it.

The husband asked me to bring her by his office on my way home.  He'd never gotten to met her.  So we drove over.  She was really scared and wouldn't get close to him.  I think it hurt his feelings.  He decided to follow me home and help me get her in the house thru all our kiddos.  They did well when we brought her in.  Diesel barks at her.  I think he wants to play but she doesn't feel like playing right now.

I made her a spot in the living room to lay and the husband went back to work.  She stuck to me like glue around the house.  So I decided I would sleep in the living room with her for the night to make sure she felt safe. The husband came in around 1am from work.  When he walked in the house, she growled at him.  Not good.  But I think she was hurting and felt vulnerable.

This morning went well.  She was still shy towards the husband.  She did finally take a treat from him and allowed him to pet her.  She just needs to spend some time with him.  She's had a pretty traumatic few days and has been at the shelter for months.  This is all a big change for her.  We just have to be patient with her.

This was us this morning.

We spent the day together.  I took her out with the other dogs to socialize.  Diesel is the only one that messes with her.  Still barking.  She's not very fond of it.  I figure when she feels a little better, she may play.  I took her to town to get some hay for the calves.  She rides really well in the truck.  Sits right next to me and doesn't make a sound.  Now she's on her bed as I'm on the computer.  Harley is on his bed sleeping too.  I think our next issue will be making her an outside dog!!

Aww... yay!! If Ruby is anything like Molly was, in a couple months you'll be asking your husband "Remember when we first brought Ruby home and she growled at you?" and you'll shake your head in wonderment b/c she will have changed that much! It's amazing what love and trust can do for a shelter animal! We used to have to call Molly to come be petted, now she flops over on her back so we'll rub her belly whenever we sit down. She's even fallen off the couch a few times when she's flopped over and we didn't notice until she had rolled off the couch!

There are already leaps of improvement...she will probably be hubby's best bud in a week or two.

Thank you for having such a loving heart.

Such a happy story! Ps....I'm sure you know this with all your dogs, but hot dogs are the best learn to love me cookies in the world! That's what we used with Annie and they worked wonders!

Well, now it's a few days later, and I'm wondering if Ruby is still sleeping in the house... You two sure do look cute though. ;)
I know the husband will eventually win her over, and you'll be left saying "hey...but she's supposed to be MY dog..."

Wow, that was quick! If it had been a shelter here, the wait could have been weeks, even months. I'm glad you have Ruby home and she's now has people of her own.

Oh Ruby is absolutely precious. She is going to be a great dog...I can tell. And about that outside idea...I hope she gets to stay inside. She is going to be a keeper and you are going to fall hard!

I wish I could wake up looking that good :).

I wonder if in her previous life (before the shelter) if she'd had a guy abuse her and that's why she's like that with the husband??
