Y'all Saw This Comin', Didn't Ya!

The husband and I went to the lease to check on the cattle and renegade donkey.  We hadn't heard anything since they put it in our pasture.  Figured we better go check it out.  Pulled into the lease and started honkin'.  Yep, that's our lazy way of calling the cattle up.  Guess who was running in the middle of the pack...Mr. Donkey.  He was right there with the cattle.

We lead the cattle up to the pens to feed.  I got out to inspect donkey.  He was a little skittish at first but a bucket of cubes will bring anything to ya!  I fed him by hand and looked him over.

One side looked good, the other, not so much.  Especially his left eye, it was a mess.  The Sheriff had said it looked like he was hit awhile back.  But the husband and I both think it looked more like he had been dragged.  He had hide peeled off.  Most of it had already scabbed over.  Some was already healed.  And some of it looked pretty nasty.

Bad side but you can only see a few spots.  I didn't want to get it all up in your face.  But, warning, next picture is of his eye.

I had brought some medicine just in case but I really wanted to wash his eye off.  It was pussy and runny.  I was mad we didn't bring the trailer.  I gave the husband my saddest eyes and said I really wanted to bring the donkey to the house.  He said he hadn't heard anything regarding what they were going to do with it.  I asked him to call and find out.  We went on home.

Fast forward five hours...Husband finally got a call back regarding the donkey.  Basically, after the Sheriff put him in our pasture, that was it.  The deputy never called the neighbor back like he said he was going to.  We were told we could do what we wanted with the donkey.  So the husband looked at me and said "are you ready to go?"  "Go? Go where?"  "To pick up that donkey," he said. Hehehe, I knew he would let me bring it home!  So we headed back to the lease (over 30 mins away) with the trailer.  After much sookin', we managed to get him in the trailer and homeward bound we went.

Got him home right before dusk and settled into his stall.  I doctored more on his boo boos.  The husband walked thru and was amazed that the donkey was just standing there, letting me put medicine on him.  What can I say, I'm a donkey whisperer too!

He really is a sweet lil thing.  Just loves to be petted.  I brushed him today after I worked on his eye.  He seemed to really like that .  He needs a bath.  He has dried blood and ooze crusted on him.  I figure one step at a time.

Oh how awful and sad. The poor guy. At least he made it to you two. You'll take good care of him.
I guess you can never have too many dogs or asses around! :)

Ahhhh he is a cutie! We have to that stay with our heifers honkey and donkey. They keep the snakes and coyotes away.... They like to chase the dogs to so be careful... Honkey and our jack russell have an ongoing feud but the donkey tries to stomp on him... Just a warning that's how they kill coyotes stomp and kick them. But he looks way to cute to do that and I am sure he is grateful you saved him.

Goodness that eye is a mess. Poor dude. I am starting to wonder though, is there some underground system , or a signal light for animals in trouble in Texas to get themselves found and helped by Kit ? They sure seem to know where to go!

I'm not surprised you brought him home. It's a toss up as to who has the softer heart, you or your husband!
It's nice that this donkey is easy to doctor, I think that he is going to be a fixture at the Crazy M for a long time, he's already won your heart!

You know, I'm beginning to think you're one of my favorite people and I also think that little guy probably deserves you for his own personal angel.

What a cute little guy. Glad to see he will have a good home. Maybe this is a stupid question but, did he loose the eye?

The Wife said...

Lil Mama- he didn't lose his eye but I think it came close. The damage starts at the eyelid and goes back from there.

What a cute little guy! You'll have him healed up in no time! You don't want an old horse that needs a good home do ya? No health issues, just needs someplace to live out his days......course Texas to Illinois is a long drive.........LOL! ;)

oh my goodness that poor critter! Do try some Vetricyn on those spots. I've had some great success with it, kills MRSA and staph infections on contact. Great stuff.
I know he's in good hands :)

I'm with Fernvalley.. You must be emitting some kind of animal signal.."Come to Crazy M if you're hurt or in need".."We are sooo kind and will love and adopt you!"
The Lord is watching over you all..bless your hearts.
