Is This Normal?

I ain't seen nothing like it before so I want my farmer friends to tell me if it's normal or not.

My neighbor's cotton is on steroids or something.  It's amazingly tall.  I stood out in it so you could see.  I'm about 5'7".

You see what I mean!  Mutant cotton!  Never seen such a thing and my grandparents grew cotton in the Panhandle.  Never do I remember it being much over a few feet high.

The Husband posed "by" the cotton.  He was too skeered to go in.  I mean, I had shorts and flip flops on and I still did it!  Oh, and he's not 5'7".  ;o)

I saw a plane spraying about a month ago.  Maybe he was using Miracle Grow or something.  I'm just in awe every time I drive by.  So what do you think?

It is a government altered mutant strain of cottom going to take over the world.

Seriously, maybe they used too much nitrogen so all the growing in going into the green and not the white. Never seen it this tall.

I spent half my childhood picking cotton, and even as a kid, all that bending over used to kill my back! I considered anything waist-high, as tall cotton!

That's mutant cotton alright... keep those doggies away, or they may get eaten!

That was more than Miracle Grow in the spray. There is a reason the push for organic cotton, cotton is one of the most "sprayed" crops out there. Since we don't "eat it" it can get hammered with Monsanto Steroids. I wouldn't hang out in that field too much, you might grow another eye. I hope I am wrong and it's just a new strain but when you start digging into the cotton world it's pretty complicated. Keep the kids and you away from that plane.

Well my husband grew up in the Mississippi Delta in Cotton country and I have never saw anything like that in my life! He said he had not either and he used to scout cotton in the summers as a college student.

Scary. I have seen similar with other crops on virgin land, but what they do with crops now is just scary. :(

That is some awfully high cotton! I don't know a lot about it, but when it was still popular down here in my farm town, I never remember it being that high.

Tee hee hee Kit, you two are in High Cotton now! Sorry, such a lame joke! Don't know much about cotton. When we went to Florida I was so dang excited driving past the cotton fields that I made The Paintiff stop so I could steal a couple bolls!

Maybe all the wet weather gave it a good start, but whatever was sprayed on it probably helped!

I've never seen a cotton plant so it was just plain interesting for me.

We haven't put anything on the grass here this year and it is mondo tall too. It's been a wet year, not just a lot of rain, but timely too.

Where's that Bullboy's real hat?

Yeah that looks tall! I seem to remember cotton being one of the crops you bend over and pull cotton off of, no?

I have never seen cotton fields either, so I don't know. But it sure does look taller than I have heard of them being.

This really had me searching the web for your answer. Alas I was not able to find much information on the plant its self. Best I can do is "between 2 and 4 feet high". So I'd say no, that is not normal, LOL! I wonder if the plant will yeild more or less cotton on a larger plant?

Couldn't tell ya, we don't have cotton on this side of the state, and I've never seen it in person :) I know, I'm a lot of help, right :)

Silly people! Where do you think they get the cotton for the Big & Tall store.

My hubby grew up in Louisiana. I showed him your picture and says he has seen it that high. Says that's where 'High cotton' comes from. He also says that the only thing is that it takes the cotton longer to mature when it's that tall, which is why most people grow shorter cotton.

I saw a very interesting article today that showed a cotton crop almost as large as this.

They over winter calves on winter rye and then plant the cotton. The production is way above their normal yield.

Wow, that's huge!

I love the miracle grow in the spray plane idea! Hilarious! haha!

I loved Denisarita's big and tall comment... I haven't seen cotton that tall and I imagine there have been pickers over a few generations that wished it had been that tall. I posted photos of me in my tomato plants that were tall like that but with tomatoes it's not all that unusual. That's amazing!
