Appalling Behavior

The husband and I belong to a breeders forum for rodeo stock. The last week or so, this story has started an uproar on the board. It is such a horrible story and makes me furious.

Here is what the original post said....

"Hi everyone, need your prayers for Wendy and her horse.
She was rodeoing this 4th was at Ft. Pierre, done with the rodeo and fireworks were going off.
Put Dully in her trailer, got up about midnight, put him in the arena as all yards were taken, saw young people partying but didn't think anything of it, got up at 6am he was gone. Terrified went looking for him along with many others, seems the partiers had rode him down the main street so hard ripping his shoes off. Tied him to a tree roped his legs, beat him took his front and back legs with ropes an stretched him out he fell to the ground, tied his legs as you would a calf and roped and beat him, he is cut all over burned his legs, the dad of the one kid hid him at his place another kid found him told her to get the sheriff to go there not to go alone, i am sure they were going to destroy him. They brought him to her his head fell into her arms. She rushed him to vet his legs were swelling an after washing him off found it to be even worse. Today his legs broke open and can see the tendons, if the tendon stays on the bone and if they can keep infection out. He may heal but I don't think he will be the same from something so terrible. She is beside herself. There is more but this is enough for you to know the jest of it all. We need your prayers Can not believe anyone would do such a thing, and the Dad had guts enough to tell the sheriff he wanted Wendys phone no. he had deep pockets, he makes rough stock saddles at Ft. Pierre.seems to think he is above the law of any kind. Don't they hang horse thief's in SD???"

I didn't know if anyone else had heard about this story. Here is a newspaper article on it as well...

Worst thing about it is they still haven't arrested anyone yet! On an update posted today, according to a local newspaper, the "States Attorney Tom P. Maher says the case is still being investigated and he is reviewing the information that law enforcement has provided. He says once he is satisfied that he has checked out all reports, statements, recordings and photos linked to the allegations, he will determine whether or not to charge anyone and says he could also send the case to a grand jury as well."

How could you NOT charge someone! Please, explain that to me!

All I know is the book better get thrown at these low lifes. I feel so badly for Wendy and her horse. I can't imagine the emotional damage done to Dually. Hopefully, the physical wounds will heal but that horse will never be the same.

Oh my gosh!!

Those people should be subjected to the same torture they made that poor horse endure. That is horrible!

a couple of pickups, ropes tied to the ankles, stretch them out a beat them then make them work at a vet clinic cleaning wounds and seeing people cry about their injured animals. This is heinous.

Absolutely disgusting. Animal cruelty, theft, malicious mischief....I hope those self-centered, cruel people are found and the book is thrown at them (or the hay fork). I feel so sorry for the owners and hope the horse recovers with few physical or emotional scars.

"The sheriff said he doesn't know if the abuse was intentional, or the outcome of bad judgment."

Seriously??? Does it matter which one it is?

He said the incident is being discussed on Internet blogs, making it difficult to separate what people really know, from what they read, as he conducts his investigation.

"It's (blogging) kind of gotten in the way," the sheriff said."

Oh bullshit. You know who did it-you know what was done...what the hell is the holdup? Bloggers?
My ass.
*sorry*

OH geez that makes me sick to my stomach

The perpetrators must be the sons/daughters of some prominent city folk! There is no excuse for animal cruelty! How sad! And of course I'll pray for Wendy and her horse.

People who will do this to an animal, will eventually move on to people. This is inhumane and illegal. The people who did this should be held accountable, and so should the "law" that has sworn to uphold justice.

Hey where are those PETA people (I'm spitting now) when you need the?

Andrea said...

Rebecca Welch and I are on the same line. I read those same two lines and thought...."What the...." Seriously, that Sheriff is stupid! It does sound like some one there has really deep pockets.

I could not imagine someone doing that to any animal. It obviously was more than one person.....I can only imagine the pain the horse and Wendy are feeling right now. Such a horrible thing to happen...

Yeah, and where is PETA now???.

I had herd about this in a couple of other blogs , why ? just why? I have a few ideas that would be appropriate justice , however legal?
Poor Dually , and Wendy , prayer going out to them

Paige said...

Why? Because the stories they are getting. from actual relevant sources rather than blogs or otherwise not first hand stories, may not add up--- a good prosecutor will keep that in mind when reviewing the evidence and not charge someone if there is a decent question about what really happened.

Really, if we were not there, we do not know what happened, and cannot pass judgment on a prosecutor who has more before him than we do----

let justice work, and don't jump to conclusions before it had time to. That serves no one

The fact that anyone (were they kids or adults? although it doesn't really matter) would do this to a living animal just shows how scary our society is. There are so many out there with no respect or remorse. What would even go through someone's head as they did this? I am apalled.

Robynn's Ravings said...

Unbelieveable. Incomprehensible. Wholly evil. I would remove myself from this earth if I raised children capable of such protracted cruelty. I hope they get to the whole truth and justice is served. I'll refrain from saying what that would look like in my book. We will be praying for poor Dually and Wendy as well.

This is the kind of crap that pisses me off! There is absolutely no reason for anyone, and I mean anyone, to do this!! Come on! I am telling you right now, if that was my horse, I would make sure that the Sheriff would be doing something about it! Has anyone ever heard that murderers always start by abusing animals? These guys need to be put away!
This just breaks my heart, for Wendy and her horse.

That is sickening! And yet here in NY the authorities persecute people who keep a few more cats than is considered normal. I hope they do through the book and the desk and everything else in the courtroom at them...and don't use the Internet as an excuse to let them off. Poor, poor, horse.

Paintsmh said...

That poor horse! I can't imagine waking up to find my animal gone, then to find it in such a condition. Those kids ought to have the book, along with the kitchen sink, and perhaps the worst tempered bull to be found thrown at them! And after the bull gets through with them, no medical attention for at least 12-18 hours...Seems appropriate to me...

City girl turned Country Girl said...

OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!! How in the world could anyone be so cruel!! Poor Dually!!!! And Wendy must be so distraught, that poor horse will never be the same if he survives. OH I think they should be treated the same way!!! It breaks my heart wondering what that poor horse was feeling and probably NOT understanding what and why they were doing this to him...

Please keep us posted, we may just need to start up a petition to send to that county's DA! In KS they would be prosecuted to the max!! And the Dad he should be shot too!!!

lisa said...

I wish the old ways were still in effect!! Because they would get hung for being horse thieves and that horse was someone elses property and they stole it and they should be held accountable for what they did!!! You are right, on the outside the horse could heal but on the inside it will never be the same. I am so sorry for the horse it is just inexcuseable!!

How appalling. Despicable behaviour! I hope they catch and punish those responsible.

I can't even be nice right now, this just sends rage through my heart. I really hope there is a special wing in HELL for people that do these things! As for the rest of their lives.....cowgirls unite and wish them all BAD KARMA forever!

Jen's Farmily said...

How horrible!! I really hope they get charges pressed against them. That is ridiculous!

This is sick, I don't know how people can be so mean to an animal. Last week in the paper I saw where a horse had been found with the brand cut off his hip so he could not be traced. The horse had been turned loose on the road, he is at the "Return to Freedom" rescue in Calif. now.

It is so sad that some people can raise such mean and cruel kids... and so the legacy lives on. I hope good comes out of this tragic tale and we all send our good energies and prayers to Wendy and to the healing of her wonderful horse Dually.

I've heard that story too, but not the details. It makes me sick to my stomach. I'm pretty sure if it was my animal, you'd have hell holding me back. Somebody would get hurt bad. I'd be in jail. Old school ways still happens around here.

some people are just disgusting.

Hang them and hang them high. and while them are hanging you can use the whip....
Where's Peta and the SPCA
There's no excuse for the this stuff..

You have got to be kidding me!?! They have not arrested anyone? This type of behavior makes me sick...if I ever witness this type of behavior I would probably end up in jail...because my 45 would come out, or better yet I would "git a rope"!

Urban Cowboy - maybe you and I would be cell neighbors?

It's been mentioned on here that this type of violence to animals leads to violence to humans. Let me say this as best as I can: I wouldn't need to practice on an animal. If this involved me in any way, justice would be served. It may not be under the approving eye of that useless sheriff, but there would be justice.

Shirley said...

What happened here should never have happened, and my heart and prayers go out to Wendy and her horse. However, the biggest problem here is not the justice system, but parents and society: Parents who should be held accountable for not teaching their children good morals and values, and society which glorifies violence and evil- if children are not given the foundation of a moral, just, and charitable upbringing how can they learn to be decent human beings? I know that we who belong to the horse blogosphere as a rule don't raise this type of children. I pray that some good will come of this evil, and that those cruel youths will be ashamed, made to pay for their crime, and, above all, change their ways.

The hair on my arms just stood up and tingled at this abomination. Makes me wonder what happens to the animals that they actually own ... You know they know right from wrong because they tried to hide it. Thank heaven for the young person that found the horse and had the courage to report it to the Sheriff. Some one did a right job on that young person. I hope that the courts also do right and charge who ever did to the full extent of the law- but I'll bet that won't happen, it seldom does.

That is absolutely horrible! The people that did this should have the same thing done to them.
