I'm a Neurotic Mess

Wanted to show you what I've been workin' on. The husband has decided to take my prints out to local businesses and set up a table at the local sale barn to see if he can sell them. I have no confidence in myself to even try to have people buy them. I told him he could handle all the business part of it cause I get nervous just thinkin' about it. This Friday will be the first day at the sale barn. I plan on helping set up the table then leaving. Can't stand there and watch, too nerve racking!

So here is a sample of what I have (please don't judge my photography by my horrible pictures of the pictures!)...

Plus many more. I am selling the prints (11x14) unframed or framed. Just hopin' someone might like them enough to throw down a few bucks!

Sweetie , what you need to do is step away from it , and look at the work as though it was someone else's. I think if you could do that you would see what we see ,and your hubby sees. Great talent an wonderful pictures ,with content ,eye appeal and balance .The subjects are unique and your use of light is amazing. So there.
And if I were to buy one of your pictures , and know you were nearby how cool would it be to meet the artist?
Trust yourself girlfriend, you rock!!!

I completely and totally agree with everything that fernvalley said above.

Amazing images, wonderful talent. You go girl!

Just persevere, times are tough all over, but good quality work WILL sell.

You have a wonderful eye, you are talented with a camera! Trust me I go to a lot of art conventions and your stuff will sell. It's simple enough for the average person to understand but artsy enough for a trained eye.

Thanks guys! Y'all ROCK!

I think it will go great, your photo's are wonderful. my favorite of these is the boot in the stirrup. what does the cowboy think of you selling his ass? it is a great photo regardless of the nice subject matter.
how cool your hubby is so proud of your art and taking on that part of it from you!

You're joking... right?
Hun, your work is fantastic, and I'm just waiting for this darn framer to finish "my" Americana barn print, so I can get it hung... and share it with the world!

PLEASE tell me that you have the chaps one on your other site... I WANT this one as well, and I want it so bad, I can taste it!!

Just breath..... okay?
I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised!

Yes you just need to look at it as if it were someone else's work. It is hard to put yourself out there for anyone to praise you, but also to have some uneducated critiques is DARN scary! You are good and just stick with it and start there and go on with it! Being an artist is always hard, but be confident in yourself and your talents, the rest will follow along. PS I dosen't hurt to be as darn cute as you and use it to your advantage, doll up in your western garb and you will have those cowboys begging you to buy your photographs! ;)

I think they are incredible--in fact, as soon as I can think of a place to put something, I am going to hit you up my own self

Quit being so hard on yourself! Good for you taking this challenge on and what an awesome husband standing behind you 100%! I think your prints look wonderful and really love the frames you chose for them.
Good luck!

Have you signed them and numbered them in some way..if not on the front..on the back of the work..I certainly would. Relax..it will all be OK! :)

I think you'll be surprised at how well you'll do. I was in custom framing business for 35 years. I've seen a lot of art, more bad than good, but I promise your photos land on the good side.

As everyone has already said, your photos are wonderful! I saw some greeting cards (blank inside) recently in a store with photos of western scenes on them and it made me think of you. Your photos are so much better than theirs were! Cards might be another idea...

You rock girl! I would be proud to have one of your pictures in my house! They are beautiful, and you are one talented cowgirl!!!

I'm the same way. I don't think I could be there, but I'm really neurotic. I got nervous driving to my friend of 10 years house on Sunday for a birthday party. I kept thinking it would be easier to turn around and go home! I had a great time! Crazy!

I agree with what the first commentor said, but also being neurotic, I totally support you in stepping back at least for the first time! Good Luck lady and I know it will be a success!

Oh goodness, I would be nervous and feel the same way as you! :) We are all pulling for you and it sounds like other readers had some great ideas (sign and number, business cards.) You should relax, you take great photos, they will sell themselves!! Can't wait to hear how it goes.
p.s. your hubby is a keeper! ;

Kit, I am sure they will sell splendidly! You have a great eye for capturing moments that will look so wonderful on any wall that I'm certain folks will want them!

Ed said...

Hey Kit, from a photographer with no self esteem, let me tell ya, I have done a few shows and expected to sell nothing and folks suprised me, I sold a bunch of 11x14's that were only matted. Worst comes to worst at least you get to make contacts and give out a bunch of cards, I now have repeat business just by talking to the folks at the shows. You are a fantastic photographer, don't sell yourself short.
Good luck at the barn sale..:-)

They are beautiful! I cannot even choose a favorite. Good luck at the sale. You have a talent and I am sure great things will come from it.

Let us know how it goes!

Hey! I think your pictures are great.

You need to mentally seperate the art and business aspects though. There's the business side and the art side. And that is hard. I've done tons of landscape designs that people have modified because it wasn't quite what they want. That used to crush me. Because in my mind...my artists mind...those were fantastic just the way they were. But on the business side that just wasn't clickin' with the money or what those folks wanted.

Your shots are great...you know your subject matter. Your blog is super well crafted. I think you should expand your marketing. I have some ideas for marketing...if your interested send me an email to tami(dot)weingartner(at)gmail(dot)com or better yet start a marketing ideas thread on your blog and let us throw some ideas out for you.

I think I can pretty safely say that anyone who is commenting here regular basis wants to see you succed in all your endeavors.

I know what you mean about not wanting to market your own work- I'm that way too and if it weren't for my husband I'd never sell anything. That being said, it's always a good idea to be there when your work is being displayed. People like to talk to artists, and you, my dear, are an artist; and you may meet some wonderful people who , like Ed said, will become repeat customers. And that's what makes a sucessful business.

Robynn's Ravings said...

Talent should be compensated and if a market is there, share the joy of your work!! You'll be a hit AND make money!

I'm excited for you to be having a sale and so should you be!!.. cause you are so talented! Hang in there and time will prove it. You have an eye for the subject and capture just the right look. We all know that... so keep the pics coming! you are awesome girlie!

Girl! You just don't know how good you are . . . and that is good. Let hubby sell those pictures and you keep making them! I love them all!

For Pete sakes woman, you're good at what you do and shouldn't feel neurotic about selling your stuff. I do understand how you feel though.
